Had lunch here with a friend when we were short on time and had to eat close to Crown Point. The place was pretty empty at lunch time on a Tuesday, there was only one other table. I ordered the pulled Chicken Sandwich and I was very delightfully surprised. It was tender and I tried several of the sauces with it. All of them were delicious! The corn bread side was a bit dry, but I enjoyed the sandwich so much I brought my husband back for lunch the next day. He loved it too. He tried the pulled pork which was smoky and delicious. I wanted to branch out but the pulled Chicken was so good I had to eat it again. Loved it the second day too. He also enjoyed trying all the sauces, but we settled on different favorites. I ordered a pound of brisket to take home for sandwiches and was a bit disappointed. It was pretty dry and they didn't send any sauces at all home. All in all, I will be back and I hope they stay!

I finally made my way down to the actual business as my first impression was at the corn fest. The meal I had at the fest was good!! The meal today was lacking. The server was really friendly and the place looked clean. That was the good. The pulled pork was plentiful but dry, very dry. It is a shame because it was in a juicy tray at the fest. The Mr. Pibb Sauce is good and the coleslaw I dump on my sandwich made it a bit better. The Mac and cheese was NOT good. It was really dry and didn't have much flavor. I added a ton of salt that didn't improve it much. I really wish it were cheesier. I'm not sure if they just make it and reheat it but that us my guess. They should keep the sauce separate then mix together and heat. It was really dry... Gordon Ramsey would have been screaming a lot. When our waitress asked about our sides we wanted to know if the cornbread was really dry. She said she really didn't know but they have cornbread that has sour cream in it and its really moist. Nope. I also had a coupon for a mini sandwich so I asked for the chicken sandwich. It had a nice smoky flavor but dry as all heck, for all I know it could have been wood shavings. I never got a refill on my soda and was never asked. I looked around though and they did have fridges with cans. Soda was a bit pricy for that reason. They have a bar with Journeyman's vodka, rum, whiskey etc which is nice. I might come back for a drink but I really am not too sure.

Bad- OMB "Oh my Bad" 1.Carry-out service very slow 20 minutes for one brisket sandwich and 6 wings 2.Smoked brisket sandwich had the texture of crock pot beef pot roast after 12 hours. The brisket kind of reminded me of wet paper towels! No taste/flavor/seasoning to the brisket at all. This is not a point of destination BBQ restaurant. Sorry, very disappointing. Bad

I have honestly never been so disappointed when looking so forward to a BBQ place. I found this on yelp and made sure they were going to be open on a Sunday. We went there after my sons lacrosse game and the smell was heavenly. After being seated, we were all ready to order only to be told they were out of just about everything! And when I say everything, I'm really not kidding. No ribs, brats, pork etc... I think they could've told us that before seating us. Simply inexcusable after I was looking so forward to eating there.

Food is fabulous- when they have it. Several times I've gone and they're out of their staples, but don't let you know until you've ordered. Their bar menu it's great, journeyman cocktails...but every time I've been, and I mean every time- it's a different person behind the bar who has no clue how to mix a drink. They have to read the recipe book, which would be fine- but the drinks are still short poured or you have to coach them how to do it. Love the place, but I wish they'd get their business and staff on the same page because they've got a great product but lacking consistency.

Talk about a food coma! Second time here and just as good as the first. The portions are huge, the food is delicious, the prices are beyond reasonable and the craft beers in both bottle and on tap are great. They make their own sauces and I love trying them all within one sitting. Our service was great; very attentive even by those who weren't technically our server. We will absolutely be back.

Great BBQ in a unique location! This restaurant is located in the basement connected to the old jailhouse right off of the scenic Crown Point Square. This jailhouse is notorious for having been escaped from by no less than John Dillinger - hence his picture greets you when you walk in the door. If you weren't hungry when you started down those steps, you will be by the time you get to the bottom! The smell of smoked pit BBQ fills the air. We tried a sampler platter of pulled pork and chicken, briskett, and a BBQ bratworst that was nothing I've ever tasted - amazing! Do yourslef and favor and make to Smokey's Basement BBQ!

I had a full slab of baby back ribs, coleslaw and BBQ beans. It was all amazing fresh, ribs were tender and the BBQ/ smoke flavor were top notch. As soon as I entered I met the chef, very polite and he went over the while menu with me. Fantastic service I highly recommend this restaurant. The also have multiple BBQ sauces from sweet to spicy.

Still on a quest for decent bbq in Northwest Indiana, we decided to try this place in Crown Point. It is in the basement of a building down the street from the old courthouse on the square. The atmosphere in there is great, old time building feel without the predictable bling of a chain restaurant trying to look old and cool. The people here are really friendly, and we had really good service. I ordered the smoked brisket plate with two sides, and got chili and cole slaw. The plate comes with corn bread, which was really good. The chili was really, really good, and the cole slaw was just ok. I think it needs some salt added to it when it's made to make the flavor come out. The brisket was terrible. It was not warm at all and had so much fat in it it was spongy looking. When I ate it I had a grease feeling left on the roof of my mouth. There was a puddle of fat on my plate. I picked through it to get the meat, and wound up leaving half of it on the plate. They have 5 sauces on the table, one is Sweet Baby Rays, the 4 homemade sauces are amazing. They run the gambit; one is a thin vinegar sauce with a good bite, one is made with Mr.Pibb, one with honey, yum. My wife got the pulled pork, It looked like it was dipped in au jus or something before it came out to rehydrate it. Her cornbread was soggy on the bottom from the juice on the plate. She got a corn cob-ette that was frozen before it came out, all mushy still on the cob. I really wanted to like this place, they need to go to Hickory River BBQ in Champaign or Wagner's over in Chesterton to learn how to do bbq. Bottom line is the folks there are really pleasant and attentive, great chili and cornbread, nice atmosphere. If you like to go through your phone on the internet, there is no wifi or phone signal here at all.

Some of the best BBQ around.... And the staff is super friendly.... I HIGHLY recommend this please for all BBQ enthusiasts and BBQ noobs as well. The first time I visited, I was greeted with a very warm welcome and conversation ensued. When I ordered, they left me alone to enjoy the succulent meal only occasionally asking how it was and saying they were open to suggestions. Had some drinks that were phenomenal as well..... This is a family owned local business and I am all about supporting such places, also it doesn't hurt that they have AMAZING service and delectable eats.

Stopped by on a Friday evening. The pros: 5 different BBQ sauces you can put on, all of them pretty tasty. 4 made by them, and a bottle of sweet baby ray's. They also had honey that I put on the cornbread that made it superb! My son had the half rack of baby back ribs that were really good. He said his mac & cheese & corn on the cob were good as well. The cons: my brisket had way to many chunks of fat and wasn't very warm. I asked the waitress too, which was better the pulled pork or brisket & she recommended the brisket. I wish they did a sampler platter of some brisket, pulled pork & hot link.

Ok - so I've read the reviews and I must say I was surprised because I didn't have high expectations. But I was in town for business and work paid for the meal. - I will say the food I ate was very good. I was with a coworker and his wife, we tried the pork, the baby backs & the brisket. It was all very good- my comparison is that 1, I love BBQ and two I was just in Austin Tx and had the chance to eat some pretty awesome BBQ just last week. The brisket was well seasoned with just the right flavor of smoke and trimmed perfectly. The ribs were full of meat and the dry rub was great, the pulled pork was firm and flavorful as well. I would definitely come back. The string beans were great, the Mac and cheese was also very good. And the corn bread was very flavorful and not at all too sweet. If you've been once and didn't like it I suggest trying it again and sharing what you didn't like with the staff. They seemed to genuinely care about our feedback. They're a new joint and I'd love to see them succeed based on my dining experience. - give them a try

I stopped in for carry out and purchased a mini brisket sandwich ($3.95) for myself and an ala carte brisket dinner ($8.95) for my husband. When I returned to my car I had to check to make sure the order was correct because the bag was so light. The mini sandwich was basically a slider, three bites and it was gone. My dreams of not having to cook were shattered as I had to make a few sides for my husband to accompany his brisket. The brisket was tender and delicious but hardly a dinner-sized portion, and the spicy sauce was just ok. I believe the menu showed a 'by the pound' price of $15.95. Seems a bit high for BBQ.

We visited this establishment on Sunday, January 19th at about 5:30 pm. This was our first visit. My initial impression was that I hope they have good insurance. When you park in the back parking lot (we weren't sure if we could get in at the front as that whole side of the building was dark) and walk to the entrance, the walkway was full of snow, slush and ice. We had to navigate stairs and a ramp to get in the door. Once inside, we were seated in the only area open which was in the bar. The flooring in the dining room was slick ceramic tile. My husband and I both were sliding around. I don't know how the staff navigates without falling. Once seated and given menus, we noticed that the selections were limited to your standard BBQ fare, which is fine, but there were no appetizers and only one salad choice on the menu. If this were a carryout place that would be fine, but it is a sit-down restaurant and a few more choices would have been nice. My husband and two sons ordered the half-slab of baby back ribs, and I got the pulled pork sandwich. When everything started to come out, the food runner was fairly incompetent. My husband's plate cracked me up as they just slapped the half rack on a giant plate - no garnish or anything. It didn't even take up half the plate. I can't understand why they don't just toss everything in a basket with paper like most BBQ places do. The ribs and pork were okay, not fantastic and certainly not worth what we paid for them. The sides were awful. The mac and cheese was dry and tasteless. The potato salad was just strange. The cole slaw was just a very basic slaw, which, in comparison with everything else was fine. Our experience was all pretty confusing. Half of the staff wore tshirts that said "Got Pizza?" on the back, which we actually wish we had. There were not many people there at all, but our waitress talked to her friend more than she paid attention to us. She even complained to us about the food runner and her lack of service. I don't think complaining to your customers about the other staff is appropriate. All in all we learned that this would be a place to occasionally order ribs to-go and eat them at home. We spent $80 for the four of us. I am assuming that this restaurant is owned by the same people as the pizza place next door. It was just all in all a disappointing visit and, other than maybe some carryout, we won't return.

My boyfriend and I order in tonight because we didn't feel like going out and thought it would be a nice alternative to pizza. We were actually excited to have a BBQ place in town let alone that delivers. First of all we were told it would be $26 and some change, when he brought it to the door said it was $34. I don't understand how 2 plates listed at $11.95 came to be $34. We asked to see a receipt for the breakdown and he only had his ticket with no breakdown, not even a receipt for us. We shook it off and went to eat our meal. Chicken was dry, Mac and cheese was tasteless, and the chili w/ brisket was terrible. One bite of that and my boyfriend said "we will not be ordering this again" and he eats pretty much anything. Most of our dinner went into the garbage. We will not be ordering from there again nor would I recommend it to anyone.
